Review: The Swanston Hotel Melbourne
After spending a few weeks in the Yarra Valley region of Victoria I decided to spend a couple of days in Melbourne’s CBD before heading back to the Gold Coast. As this was a last minute decision I logged onto Trivago to check out some hotel deals.
For me, the location of my accommodation has always been a priority, especially when I’m travelling solo. I want a hotel that is centrally located in a safe part of town, is walking distance to most city attractions and close to public transport.
The Swanston Hotel
The 4 star Swanston Hotel, located at 195 Swanston Street Melbourne, filled the brief so I booked my two night stay in a standard queen room through Expedia for $106 (including GST) per night, excluding breakfast.
The Swanston Hotel Melbourne Grand Mercure is arguably Melbourne’s best located hotel, situated in the very heart of the city.
Getting Around Melbourne
Getting around Melbourne is very easy, with stops for all main tram routes just meters from the hotel’s front doorstep, and Flinders Street Station is just a short walk away.
Nearby is a wide variety of restaurants and bars, theatres, galleries and shopping hot spots like the Melbourne Emporium and the Bourke Street Mall. Within walking distance from the Hotel you’ll also find many of Melbourne’s well-known lane-ways and attractions, such as Degraves Street, Federation Square and Southbank.
My Stay at the Hotel
I arrived at The Swanston Hotel at 3pm and was greeted by the Concierge, who directed me to the front desk. I was promptly checked-in and directed to my room, which was on the fourth floor.
My room was very pleasant. The décor was a little tired but the room was very clean and had everything that I was expecting. Queen bed, flat screen TV, coffee and tea making facilities, fully stocked mini-bar, microwave, etc.
The Hotel offers a $10 credit to guests who choose not to have their room serviced daily. As I am all for saving the planet I phoned the front desk and opted in for this offer. The credit can be used at any of the Hotel’s dining and bar facilities (‘Cocoon Bar’, ‘Soul Café’ and ‘Louden Bar and Grill’).
The view from my window was nothing to write home about. My room was situated at the back of the hotel so I was looking out onto nearby buildings and the hotel’s back alley. Considering the price of the room it’s exactly what I was expecting. The view was not offensive in any way and did not detract from the enjoyment of my stay.
After becoming acquainted with my room I went to explore the hotel. The hotel has a pool and a gymnasium, both of which I didn’t use as time didn’t permit but they looked very good.
Hotel’s Restaurants & Bar
Right next door to the Hotel is the Soul Café, which offers a classic café style menu that’s perfect for a light breakfast, lunch or dinner. During my stay I had breakfast here, mainly because it was convenient, affordably priced and could be charged to my room. I had coffee and a croissant, which was quite enjoyable.
Located on the Mezzanine Level of the Hotel is the cosy and stylish Cocoon Bar. It’s a great place to relax, catch up with friends or other hotel guests and enjoy a drink. The Bar offers a snack menu and mains meals that range in price from $16 to $19.
The Louden Kitchen and Grill is a contemporary restaurant open for casual dining seven days a week. The Grill caters to a wide variety of tastes, including family friendly options, a selection from the grill, shared snack concepts, and delicious Chef’s specials. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to dine at the Grill during my time at the Hotel. Maybe next time.
During my two night stay at The Swanston Hotel I found the bed very comfortable and slept incredibly well. Apart from the occasional ringing of a tram bell, I didn’t hear any street traffic or noise from the other guests.
The Hotel’s check out time is 11am, which I appreciated. When I was checking-out the hotel’s desk staff where prompt, friendly and professional.
As my flight back to the Gold Coast was departing at 6pm, I took advantage of the Hotel’s secure luggage storage facility so I could fully enjoy my day in Melbourne. This service was very well operated by the hotel’s staff; it took no time at all to drop-off and retrieve my luggage.
All-in-all my short stay in Melbourne at The Swanston Hotel was a very enjoyable one and proved to be great value for money. My only regret was that I couldn’t stay a few days longer.
